Enable Wireless (Wi-Fi) in Windows Server 2008 (R2) To Fix No Connections Available Error

After installing Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the wireless adapter or WiFi adapter is not working or functioning. System cannot detect or see any wireless networks
with no wireless networks available error message, and system cannot connect to Internet
or wireless LAN.

To make matter worse, users have installed the proper signed driver for the wireless adapter, either through Windows Update, drivers CD from vendor or download latest and correct driver from OEM or manufacturer’s website. In Device Manager, the wireless or WiFi network adapter is working properly. And, when using Windows Server built-in diagnostics feature to troubleshoot the no wireless connection problem, it indicates that the wireless adapter is either having driver or hardware issue.

The cause of the no wireless connection is that Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 disables and turns off Wireless LAN service by default, which supports the wireless WLAN Auto Configuration service, and configures WLAN AutoConfig for automatic startup.

In order to turn on Wireless LAN and WLAN AutoConfig service in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, go to Server Manager (in Administrator Tools). Go to Features branch and click on Add Features. Click and tick the check box for Wireless LAN Service. Complete the installation wizard to install wireless support.

The Wireless LAN Service configures the WLAN AutoConfig service to start automatically, regardless of whether the computer has any IEEE 802.11 wireless adapters installed. When enabled, WLAN AutoConfig enumerates every wireless network adapter installed on the computer, manages IEEE 802.11 wireless connections, and manages the wireless connection profiles that contain the settings required to configure a wireless client to connect to a wireless network. WLAN AutoConfig allows user to connect to an existing wireless network (data encryption key or network key may be required), change wireless network connection settings, configure a connection to a new wireless network, and specify preferred wireless networks. WLAN AutoCofig also notifies user when new wireless networks are available. When switching wireless networks, WLAN AutoConfig dynamically updates your wireless network adapter settings to match the settings of that new network and a network connection attempt will be made.

PCI Express 3.0 Specifications Release Pushed Out to 2010

PCI Express
3.0 is a newly enhanced specification that is expected to be released by this year. However, a recent announcement from Al Yanes, PCI SIG President has confirmed that the specifications release date will be pushed out to next year due to additional time and effort needed to testify and ensure its backward compatibility capability with existing PCI-Express based products.

If you recall, PCI Express 2.0 is clocking at 5GHz which is twice as fast as its first generation PCI Express 1.0 stuck at 2.5GHz. However, due to nature of its 8 and 10-bit data encoding scheme, there is overhead that is needed to be compensated and hence the effective bandwidth is only at 4GTps for PCI Express 2.0, which is no longer sufficient for high end graphics card and gaming requirements. Now with the new definition and technology shift, PCI Express has able to achieved 3.0 specification with bus speed scaling up to 8GHz. Besides, the new data encoding schmets at 128-bit and 130-bit has managed to eliminate the overhead required, boosting the effective bandwidth to 7.99GTps suitable for more intensive graphics requirements.

Regardless of its full capability, there is a need to ensure the new specification is fully backward compatible with existing version which is one of the main reasons that contribute to the delay. Nevertheless, we should expect the new specification to be finalized and released by second quarter of 2010, with the new PCI Express 3.0 compliant devices available by 2011.

Optimizing Windows Memory Usage with Minimem

Running too many applications
can cause computer performance to slow down or even crashed. Most of the times you need to identify and close applications that consume a lot of memory usage or reboot
computer in order to solve the performance issue. Instead of taking action only when you encounter the slowdown issue, now there is a utility, named as Minimem that is able to proactively optimizes processes by reducing memory usage running in background.

Minimem is a free utility that is originally designed to reduce memory usage caused by Firefox only, but now it has been enhanced to optimize memory usage for any other applications by staying at system tray and running silently in the background. You can configure to optimize as many processes as you preferred and at the same time, it provides you some options to configure the interval to optimize memory regularly, do not optimize if overall RAM available is more than the specific memory usage as well as do not optimize the foreground process. Once processes are selected to be optimized, it will optimize memory by removing as many of non-necessary pages as possible on every interval in order to ensure low CPU usage at all times. These removed pages will only be loaded back whenever there are needed to further optimize the overall system by fully-utilizing the memory usage.

Minimem version 1.3 (minimem1.3.msi) by minimem.kerkia.net has a user-friendly GUI and doesn’t require any special skill to operate, it is tested and confirmed running well on Windows XP 32 bits
SP3 and should support all Windows versions. The only pre-requisite to run Minimem is you must have .Net Framework 2.0 installed on your computer.

Apple 3G S iPhones Potentially Capable of Running Full HD 1080p Media Clips

Previously we mentioned about the teardown analysis that showed a 720p HD capable processor being embedded in Apple latest’s iPhone 3G S, but in actual fact, the processor is claimed to be capable of delivering 1080p full HD media decode capability based on testing conducted by a forum member at Weiphone.

During the testing, a full HD with 1920 X 1080 resolution media clip was copied from PC then played in iPhone and surprisingly, it is claimed to be able to run smoothly at 30 fps (Frame per second) without any lagging. Furthermore, the media playback was run on its original iPhone player without any tweaking or third party software assist. If this is true, quite interesting and wonder why Apple Inc doesn’t advertise its full capability as the best mobile device in terms of media playback. Some do speculate that the main concerns could be due to the excessive power drawn when the processor was run at full speed, which eventually impact the battery life to be used as a conventional mobile device. Besides, HD video generally consumes much more storage space and can easily take up the full capacity available even at 32GB maximum storage.

Nevertheless, with current capability of
