Volume Activation Management Tool 2.0 Download

Microsoft has released a beta version of Volume Activation Management tool (VAMT) 2.0 for system administrators in corporates and large business organizations with volume licensing agreements or subscriptions. Volume Activation Tool 2.0 primarily adds support for Microsoft Office 2010 Beta.

Activation Management Tool (VAMT) 2.0 (Beta) is a managed MMC plug-in with support for Office 2010 Beta. Administrators may use it to manage volume editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Office 2010 Beta installed with a Key Management Service (KMS) client key or a Multiple Activation Key (MAK). A convenient command line interface (CLI) allows automated, scheduled VAMT tasks without UI interaction.

From Office 2010, all installed Office 2010 must be activated, including volume license copy, which previously does not require online activation against Microsoft activation server when a VLK (volume license key) is used to install Office 2007, Office 2003 or Office XP.

Download Volume Activation Management Tool 2.0 (Beta) setup installer, vamtMMC.msi, from Microsoft Download Center.

Next Generation Sony Memory Stick Potentially Integrated with TransferJet Technology

We mentioned about TransferJet technology since early last year and if you wonder what kind of Sony products will have this technology integrated in, the recent FCC filed by the Japanese company may able to give you some hint. Just recently, Sony submitted a FCC application
for its Sony Memory Stick Duo, MS-JX8G and as you may aware, FCC is only required for those products that occupy certain radio spectrum for data transmission and that is a bit weird for this new submission unless there are wireless technology being designed into it.

Further checking on the FCC filing disclosed that the module will be run and tested on 4480MHz frequency band. If you recall, TransferJet occupies this spectrum span (but not any other 802.11a/b/g or even Bluetooth) and it is quite firm that the next generation Memory Stick Duo card may have the technology embedded into it. If this is true, it also means that users will be able to transform a normal mobile phone into a NFC (Near Field Communication) capable device easily by just plugging in the memory module. Although TransferJet is only meant for very short effective range around 1.25-inch, but with its high bandwidth of 560Mbps peak transfer and relatively lower power consumption as compared to other wireless technology, it could potentially become one of the prominent technologies especially on portable devices where battery life is one of the main concerns.

No information on availability yet, we can expect some NFC based module to be integrated directly into end consumer products, with this next generation memory card filling up the gap with simple plug and play capability to turn conventional mobile devices into it.

Chance are even the wireless network security key is automatically stored by Windows “permanently”, some users may not even bother to remember the password key, until when users reformat or reinstall Windows, or there is a new computer that wants to share the WiFi access point to connect Internet.

In any case where user can’t remember or lost the network security key for a Wi-Fi wireless connection, and unable to get the security key from the router or gateway, the freeware utility, WirelessKeyView can help to recover all wireless network security keys or passwords used in WEP, WPA or WPA2 encryption protocol stored in local computer by the ‘Wireless Zero Configuration’ service of Windows XP and by the ‘WLAN AutoConfig’ service of Windows Vista. WirelessKeyView allows users to easily save all keys to text/html/xml file, or copy a single key to the clipboard, without having to use tools to reveal, display or show original characters of password or key hidden behind asterisks.

Note that WirelessKeyView is not a hacking or cracking tool to break into a secured or protected wireless networks. It just retrieves the Windows stored key or password from registry or file location (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WZCSVC\Parameters\Interfaces\[Interface Guid] in Windows XP or \ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces\[Interface Guid] in Windows Vista), decrypt the security key and show it to end-users.

WirelessKeyView has some limitations though. It only works if the security key is used with built-in Windows’ wireless support, and not when used with third-party software which some wireless card vendors used to connect and manage the wireless connections. And, in Windows XP, a very long 128-bit WPA-PSK key will be retrieve under the ‘Key (Hex)’ column as Windows XP automatically converts it once user typed it in. The key cannot be converted back to the original plain-text key entered, but can be used to connect to the wireless network exactly like the original key.

Note: Windows 7 has built-in capability to display and show the wireless security key for user to view, and requires no such software.

Retrieve, View or Display Wireless (WEP or WPA WiFi) Network Security Key or Password in Windows 7

Windows 7, like its predecessors, remembers and saves (on user consent) the network security key or password on first connection to a secured wireless (WiFi) network which is protected by WEP, WPA or WPA2, so that Windows 7 can automatically authenticate, sign in and connect to the Internet through the wireless access point or WiFi hotspot on every system startup.

For many reason, end users may want to retrieve or view the WEP, WPA or WPA2 protected wireless network security key. For example, lost or forgotten administrator password making it impossible to view the serial key on the Wi-Fi wireless gateway or router, or need to setup new computer to access the Internet through same wireless network adapter or Wi-Fi hotspot.

The quickest way to get the network security key for an existing wireless connection, of course, is from the PC or computer which is currently connected to the wireless network. Although the network security key is saved and stored in local Windows computer, Windows OS does not provide an easy way to retrieve, view or display the network security key or password on screen, in plain text and not hidden as asterisk, until Windows 7.

How to Recover, Retrieve, Show or Display Network Security Key for WEP, WPA or WPA2 Protected Secure Wireless Network in Windows 7

  1. Go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click on Manage wireless networks on the left pane.

  3. A list of wireless networks that the PC used to connect to with saved password or security key. Click to highlight on a wireless network connection that user wants to view its network security key, and the right click on it and select Properties.

  4. Click on Security tab.
  5. The network security key for the wireless network is hidden by asterisk by default. Instead of using utilities to reveal, display or show original characters of password or key hidden behind asterisks, click on Show characters button to reveal and display the actual original network security key on screen.

Thanks to the developer, My Digital Life received a license to review TuneUp Utilities 2010. The download size of TuneUp Utilities 2010 is around 20 MB, considered to be small when comparing to its powerful features. Installation of TuneUp Utilities 2010 is straight forward and easy, just like any other Windows applications.

The main surprise comes after TuneUp Utilities 2010 is launched. Despite the huge and vast functionality built-into TuneUp Utilities 2010, the Start Center is clean and uncluttered. Start Center is designed with four main pillars of TuneUp Utilities 2010 – Maintain System, Increase Performance, Fix Problems, and Customize Windows, where each displaying summary of the results and/or shortcuts to the most frequently used functions.

TuneUp Utilities 2010 is made up of many integrated small utilities such as Drive Defrag, Shortcut Cleaner, Registry Defrag, Registry Cleaner, Live Optimization, Free Up Disk Space, Startup Manager, Uninstall Manager, Process Manager, Disk Doctor, Undelete, Repair Wizard, Styler, System Control and many more. With so many functionality available, user who doesn’t know where to start can rely on 1-Click Maintenance or Automatic Maintenance which automatically perform various system maintenance routines (configurable) to maintain system in tip-top condition.

TuneUp Utilities 2010 also provies user recommendations on how to improve the performance of the PC. But user has to first create a profile to let TuneUp Utilities know you want to optimize the Internet, visual effects and installed applications. Then, TuneUp Utilities checks the system and gives recommendations in term of system performance, Internet settings, visual effects and uninstallation of unused programs.

Some modules of TuneUp Utilities 2010 is actually duplicate with built-in functionality of Windows OS, such as Disk Doctor for scanning disk drive for errors, and Drive Defrag. However, Registry Defrag and Registry Cleaner are nice add-ons to optimize system registry. We also like the new Turbo Mode, which allows user to disable unwanted running programs or processes and unnecessary visual effect at one go. The Repair Wizard which fixes common problems is useful, although the the problems it able to fix is rather limited. However, we like the fact that it can recommend us to disable remote registry access capability and administrative shares. The Styler and System Control are also very useful tools which provide one-stop access to many settings and options available in Windows which otherwise users may have to spend more time just to find where to change the settings, or unable to change.

Last but not least, the TuneUp Rescue Center provides backups and ability to restore any changes that are been made by the program, which make it an indispensable tool. It also double up as system recovery similar to Windows’ System Restore, and supports Windows’ restore points.

Though good, we don’t really impress with TuneUp Utilities 2010 to optimize the Windows 7 system, which itself already a rather speedy system, especially when we also want the full visual effects turn on. Besides, with Live Optimization (enabled by default), there is no significant performance improvement felt.

There are simply too many functions in TuneUp Utilities 2010 to introduce, so it’s best just to download the free 30-day trial version to try out: TU2010TrialEN-US.exe. Overall, we found that TuneUp Utilities 2010 is a good system optimization and maintenance software product, useful for everybody who wants to keep the Windows system clean, tidy and optimized, and which probably provide all optimization tools an user ever needed complete in one package.

TuneUp Utilities 2010 can be purchased via download at www.tune-up.com and also as a box in stores. The software, which can be used on up to three computers, costs $49.95, and users of previous Tune-Up Utilities software versions can upgrade to the latest one for a discounted price of $29.95.

E-Reader Price Still Too High to Penetrate Into Consumer Market

E-reader is a new market segment that has started to gain attention as a potential replacement to conventional printed reading materials. However, before it can really become dominant, there is a need to further slash down its pricing as according to Gartner analysis report recently.

Generally, e-reader devices’ price still quite high with most of them over $199, which is very expensive to be affordable for average users. Especially when the device is not designed to be multifunction but instead only serves mainly for e-book reading purposes, it will be hard to justify for budget allocation. But with more and more e-reader products such as Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nood, Sony and many more being introduced to market, there is an expectation that the product pricing will drop while still able to integrate additional features in order to stand out from the crowd. Some of the expected features include the ability to support various eBook formats, can hook up to wireless netbook for e-Book downloading, able to synchronous with other networked devices for contents sharing on top of the e-Ink technology that can conserve power as compared to conventional electronics gadgets.

The estimated retail price of future e-reader has to be fall to around $99 by 2010 and manufacturers may have to find their way towards this objective while still able to add in additional functionality without affecting their profit margins. However, unless there is a technology breakthrough of the e-Ink LCD module that occupies mojority of the BOM (Bill of Material) cost, it may be necessary to start looking for partnership from its eco-partners or service providers to further bring down the retail price with subsidy just like other mobile devices.
